How easy are they to keep? The Bristlenose pleco a very easy and undemanding fish to keep. A great algae eater and scavenger fish to have in the aquarium. Will need good oxygenated water and décor for the pleco to take cover. Generally, will be lower down in the aquarium however once settle it will be out attached to glass/décor grazing algae.
How big do they grow? These pleco’s can grow up to 12.5 cm long.
What is the best sized tank for these? We recommend a minimum of 55 litres or two foot aquarium, having plants, bogwood and décor will be beneficial for the bristlenose plec.
What is best to feed them? Mostly a herbivore, Brisetlenose pleco will graze off algae that naturally grows in the aquarium and adding bogwood will be beneficial as they will gnaw from it. However, adding algae wafers and frozen meaty food will be great additional food source, you could also add a slice of cucumber that they will enjoy. What water conditions do they require? These Pleco’s can tolerate a wide variety of water condition, however it is important to maintain stable water parameters and keeping water well oxygenated. As long as you maintain a pH in between 6.5 – 8.0 and temperature in between 21 – 26C the pleco should thrive.
What can they be kept with? A great community fish can be kept with variety fish such as Tetras, Angels, Livebearers, Gourami’s, Corydoras and many more. Please see the compatibility chart for more information.
Where are they from? Many species are found in the rivers and floodplain areas of the Amazon Basin, but there are also species elsewhere in tropical South America, as well as two species, A. centrolepis and A. chagresi in Panama. Almost all bristlenose pleco are commercially bred and the fish that you receive will also be tank bred.
Can they be bred in captivity? Adult males possess well-developed odontodes on the pectoral fins and opercle and tentacles on the head while females do not. Cave-spawner with the male responsible for brood care. Very commonly bred in aquariums and in well-maintained mature set-ups juveniles may begin to appear without intervention.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT KEEPING TROPICAL FISH?
Answer: If you are thinking of keeping tropical fish, you need to know about the following main things: Size of your aquarium Firstly decide how much space you have for your new fish tank. Always go as big as you can fit, the bigger the better with fish keeping. Deciding what to fish to keep This will depend on the size of your aquarium. Research how big a fish is and will grow to. Small community to medium sized community set-ups are best to start with, unless you’re looking to create a biotope or species tank. Cycling your aquarium This is a very important part of keeping your cold water or tropical aquarium. Your filter is just a sponge and is no different than your washing-up sponge…until it’s “cycled” and loaded with beneficial bacteria. Maintaining your aquarium You should clean your tank on a weekly basis. A small 10-20% water change will help remove any build up of waste. Siphon your substrate and clean the glass, this will keep your tank nice and clean for your fish.
DO TROPICAL FISH NEED A HEATER?
Answer: Yes, tropical fish will require a heater. A heater ensures the temperature stays steady during the course of the day. Generally, 25°C is the optimum temperature to keep most tropical fish, this is similar to what they are used to in their natural habitat.
WHAT OTHER EQUIPMENT DO YOU ADVISE FOR KEEPING TROPICAL FISH?

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I FEED MY TROPICAL FISH?
Answer: In general, most tropical fish thrive on one or two feedings per day. You’ll need to adjust the quantity of food according to the size and quantity of fish in your tank. If your aquarium is new and you have just added your first fish, feed every other day and count the amount of food you are adding. A “pinch” is not accurate enough and may lead to overfeeding your fish.
